Directed Study:
The basic principles will be presented during lectures. Lecture material (handouts) will be available on the faculty homepage. Students will present the results of their self study examples.

Self-Study:
Students are expected to supplement and support the lecture material with their own reading. Additional exercises as homework are given.

Directed Study: In particular the course will cover the following main areas:
  • Introduction (definition, objects, service goals, quality, decision areas in logistics systems)
  • Global logistics (infrastructure, politics, markets)
  • The flow of material in international supply chains (storage, layout considerations, materials handling, traffic modes, packaging)
  • Customer Service (inventory service level, cost and revenue analysis, ABC analysis)
  • Logistics costs and tied-up capital (total logistics costs analysis)
  • Products in the logistics system (product structures, customer order decoupling point, product variants)
  • Production processes and layouts (functional, line-shaped, cellular production layout, capacity)
  • Distribution structures (material flow in distribution channels, intermediaries, cross-dock)
  • Demand management (forecast process)
  • Materials management (stock functions, material planning methods, lot sizing, safety stock determination)
Qualifikationsziele
The module focuses on the basics of global logistics. Students learn to understand logistics as a competitive weapon in global economies and globally operating industries.
  • Students get knowledge of the complexity of highly connected supply chains.
  • They learn about models and techniques to create optimized processes in global supply chains.
  • They will be able to measure, control and improve the performance of logistics systems.
