Form of teaching

The course “Introduction to Business in Germany” consists of a series of 12 individual lectures. In addition to the lectures, two company visits are going to take place.

Media type

The lecture is  based on power-point presentations, texts, and videos which are available on the study platform OPAL. 

Instruction content/structure

The lectures in the first part of the term provide an overview on the basic elements of the business life in Germany, e.g., cover topics like the social market economy and the system of co-determination in Germany. In the following lectures, the structure of the German economy ranging from the start-up scene to DAX-40 companies will be highlighted. The last part of the lecture series is devoted to different current themes, for example ownership succession in family-owned businesses.

Qualification objectives

The aim of the course is to provide a basis understanding of the specifics of the German business environment. After successfully completing the module the student will be able to: 1. systematically place the content of the other subjects he/she has studied into the wider German business context, 2. understand with regard to which aspects doing business in Germany is different from doing business in other parts of the world.

Social and personal skills

Being able to write a scientific essay on a subject adjacent to the topics presented in the lecture

English level B2,   TOEFL 550 or equivalent

2 years of academic   studies (bachelor leve) in Business Administration at a University outside   Germany

Notes

Your grade will be based on a  1½ hours closed book written exam and an essay on a given topic. You have to write the essay in a group and include a questionaire or interviews.

The participant target group for this course consists of international students who are continuing their studies at the HTW Dresden for one or two terms as international exchange students.
